Cooling system service

Water pump replace
Whereas the radiator is responsible for managing the temperature, the water pump is responsible for keeping things moving. The water pump location will differ from one vehicle to another, but you’ll usually find it at the front side of the engine. It pushes coolant fluid through the radiator and the entire cooling system, helping to transfer the heat away from the engine.
Some of the signs that fixing a water pump is in your near future are the same as those for radiator replacement. You might notice coolant leaks, high readings on your temperature gauge, and even grinding sounds in the engine.

Coolant level sensor

You’ll know that the sensor isn’t doing its job when your engine is overheating, you have low coolant levels, but no notifications have popped up, or your coolant light stays turned on despite the reservoir being full.

Radiator fan
The radiator fan sits between the engine and the radiator itself. It serves the purpose of pushing cool air through the radiator, helping it manage the engine’s temperature levels.
While it’s not always needed when driving on open roads, for example, or picking up speed on the highway, it’s essential during a city rush. It helps circulate air when none is coming in through the grille – such as when you’re stuck in a traffic jam or moving at a snail’s pace.
Signs of radiator fan problems include loud fan noise, engine overheating, and poor AC functionality.
Radiator fan clutch
The radiator fan clutch is a small device necessary for the radiator’s proper functioning. The radiator clutch is disengaged when the engine’s temperature is low enough – at that point, it spins loosely without doing much. When the temperature of the engine increases, the fan clutch radiator engages, triggers the fan, and starts cooling the engine.
Radiator fan clutches come in two varieties – non-thermal and thermal. The former is more affordable but less effective. Not triggered by the temperature, it continually spins whether the engine is hot or cool. The latter activates when the engine’s around 170℉ and disengages when it’s cooler.
You’ll want to bring your radiator fan clutch for a check-up if you notice unusual noise coming from it, your engine is getting loud, or your vehicle’s performance seems diminished.
Expansion plugs
Expansion plugs are not something that the average driver even thinks about checking. And yet, these little plugs can cause a lot of damage if they’re not doing their job right.
Vehicle manufacturers often use sand casting to create some engine and cooling system parts. Once the parts have been molded and cooled, all the excess sand must be removed, so manufacturers leave small holes just for that. Then, they use small expansion plugs to seal up these holes.
While expansion plugs can last for years to come, even they are prone to deteriorating and causing leaks.

Radiator hose(s)
Like other cooling system hoses, radiator hoses are designed to lead liquid to and from the engine. As a general rule of thumb, radiator hoses will be the largest hoses under your hood.
The upper hose will be connected to the radiator and the thermostat housing, while the lower hose will lead to the water pump. If any of these hoses burst, you must immediately bring your vehicle in for a radiator hose replacement.

Thermostat
The thermostat is a critical piece of equipment within your cooling system. It’s located between the radiator and the engine, and its primary function is to manage coolant flow into the radiator, only letting the fluid into the radiator once the engine is warm enough. It helps the engine maintain a functional operating temperature and warm up quickly.
Considering how essential it is, checking the thermostat frequently should always be on your to-do list.
If your thermostat is on its last breath, you’ll start noticing issues such as engine overheating, leaking coolant, unstable temperature, etc. Replacing the thermostat in-house is possible, but if you have no experience with it, it’s in your best interest to visit Dependable Car Care.
Thermostat testing
Thermostat testing is a relatively simple process, but it’s always in your best interest to have an experienced mechanic do it.
As a general rule of thumb, the mechanic will open the hood and start the car, letting it idle. They’ll then check to see if the coolant is flowing. When the car is just started, the thermostat shouldn’t flow as the engine hasn’t yet reached its operating temperature. If it’s flowing, it’s a sign that the thermostat isn’t doing its job.
Additionally, the mechanic will check the flow after the engine has reached its operating temperature. At this point, the coolant should be flowing freely, and it’s a sign of trouble if it doesn’t.
Thermostat replacement
If your thermostat prevents the coolant from flowing when it should or lets it flow when it shouldn’t, it’s high time to replace it. Otherwise, your engine will become a ticking time bomb, waiting for the most inopportune moment to overheat.
