Cooling system service

Cooling system service

A regular car cooling system service will help keep everything functioning well. However, unlike an oil change, it’s not necessarily something you must do yearly (depending on your mileage).
Most manufacturers recommend a cooling system service every 30,000 to 80,000 miles, so it’s best to check their guidelines.
Of course, you’ll also want to come in for an auto cooling system repair near you if you notice some issues. If your temperature gauge has higher-than-normal readings, there are antifreeze leaks, or you notice strange noises and odors, come in immediately for a cooling system service near you.
At Dependable Car Care, we offer comprehensive car cooling system repair services, so you can rest assured that your vehicle will be in good hands.

Cooling system fluid flush

Cooling system fluid flush

Heating and cooling auto repair isn’t always an expensive or time-consuming process. In some cases, you need nothing more than a cooling system fluid flush.
Over time, the coolant in your vehicle can go bad, affecting the entire system. It could get filled with rust and debris, causing harmful buildup and ultimately preventing the system from working correctly.
In this instance, coming in for a cooling system fluid flush is in your best interest.
During a coolant flush, your mechanic will first add a strong cleaner to the cooling system. The cleaner helps to loosen up and remove all the buildup and sludge from the system. Then, they hook up the system to a machine that pushes the fluid around and removes the old coolant together with all the dirt.
Finally, they fill up your cooling system with new fluid, ensuring that you’re good to go.
Visit Dependable Car Care for a fluid flush and complete car heating and cooling repair.

Cooling system drain and fill

Cooling system drain and fill

If your cooling system is in good condition and you just need to replace your coolant, you can come in for a cooling system drain and fill. It’s a simple service where your mechanic drains out the old liquid and fills your system up with new coolant.
There’s no need for cleaners, expensive machines, or advanced equipment. It’s a simple process that can be completed in less than an hour. Of course, since it’s a less demanding service, it’s more affordable than a full system flush.
As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to come in for a cooling system drain and fill every 30,000 miles.

Radiator flush

Radiator flush

A radiator or a coolant flush is another solution for ridding your cooling system of rust and sediment. Most commonly, it takes just four steps to perform a radiator flush.
Your mechanic will first drain the fluid from your car’s radiator, then fill it with coolant and conditioner. They’ll let the mixture circulate through the cooling system, then drain it all. Finally, they’ll refill the radiator with new coolant. Depending on the fluid they’re using, they might fill it with antifreeze or a mixture of antifreeze and water.
While performing a radiator flush, your mechanic will likely check for leaks and perform a cooling system inspection.

Radiator replacement

Radiator replacement

Sometimes, it’s not enough to simply drain your cooling system and fill it up with new antifreeze. If your cooling system seems to be misbehaving, you might be due for a radiator replacement.
The radiator is the heart and soul of your automotive heating and cooling system. It keeps the engine at a nice, comfortable temperature, preventing extreme heat and extreme cold from affecting performance.
Some of the telltale signs you might need a new radiator include leaks and puddles under the hood of your car, discolored fluid in the radiator, and engine overheating.
At Dependable Car Care, we’ll quickly inspect your system and perform a new radiator installation if needed.

Water pump replace

Water pump replace

Whereas the radiator is responsible for managing the temperature, the water pump is responsible for keeping things moving. The water pump location will differ from one vehicle to another, but you’ll usually find it at the front side of the engine. It pushes coolant fluid through the radiator and the entire cooling system, helping to transfer the heat away from the engine.
Some of the signs that fixing a water pump is in your near future are the same as those for radiator replacement. You might notice coolant leaks, high readings on your temperature gauge, and even grinding sounds in the engine.
Look for water pump replacement near you at the first sign of trouble, and bring your car in for a check at Dependable Car Care. Our mechanics will remove the water pump that’s due for a replacement and have your new water pump ready immediately. Keep in mind, however, that installing a water pump takes about two hours, so you might have to wait a while until we’ve repaired your vehicle.

Auxiliary water pump replace

Auxiliary water pump replace

You probably don’t have an auxiliary water pump if you have an older vehicle. Even some newer models come without one, but it’s quickly becoming a standard feature, especially in SUVs.
The auxiliary water pump circulates warm coolant, sending it to the heater core and keeping you and your passengers nice and warm during wintertime. It also helps defrost your windows.
If your auxiliary water pump is due for a replacement, you’ll usually notice fluctuating heat or no heat coming from your heaters and a malfunctioning window defrost feature.
We offer auxiliary water pump replacement service that will keep you nice and comfortable in your car all year round.

Cooling system hose(s)

Cooling system hose(s)

Of course, for the auto heating and cooling system to function and the water pumps to move the liquid around, they need hoses. As a general rule of thumb, your engine should have at least two cooling system hoses. One leads hot coolant away from the engine and to the radiator, while the other takes cooler fluid from the radiator to the engine.
Over time, any one of these two hoses could burst, causing serious issues.
If there’s a problem with your coolant system hoses, you’ll likely notice puddles under your parked car and moisture around the hoses. Your engine might even overheat.
Contact Dependable Car Care for a cooling system hose inspection and replacement to avoid further damage to your vehicle.

Coolant level sensor

Coolant level sensor

As can be concluded from the name, a coolant level sensor detects the coolant levels in your cooling system.
Most commonly, the sensor is installed in the radiator or the coolant reservoir. When the sensor’s working correctly, it will notify you when it’s time to drain and fill your cooling system.
You’ll know that the sensor isn’t doing its job when your engine is overheating, you have low coolant levels, but no notifications have popped up, or your coolant light stays turned on despite the reservoir being full.

Coolant level sensor testing

Coolant level sensor testing

While it’s not intrinsically dangerous, driving with a malfunctioning coolant level sensor could pose problems. After all, the sensor is there to notify you when it’s time for a refill or to point you to a potential problem. Therefore, it’s in your best interest to have coolant level sensor testing at the first sign of trouble.
At Dependable Car Care, we offer comprehensive cooling system services, including coolant level sensor testing. Schedule your appointment and have our experienced crew perform coolant level sensor testing.

Radiator fan

Radiator fan

The radiator fan sits between the engine and the radiator itself. It serves the purpose of pushing cool air through the radiator, helping it manage the engine’s temperature levels.
While it’s not always needed when driving on open roads, for example, or picking up speed on the highway, it’s essential during a city rush. It helps circulate air when none is coming in through the grille – such as when you’re stuck in a traffic jam or moving at a snail’s pace.
Signs of radiator fan problems include loud fan noise, engine overheating, and poor AC functionality.

Radiator fan clutch

Radiator fan clutch

The radiator fan clutch is a small device necessary for the radiator’s proper functioning. The radiator clutch is disengaged when the engine’s temperature is low enough – at that point, it spins loosely without doing much. When the temperature of the engine increases, the fan clutch radiator engages, triggers the fan, and starts cooling the engine.
Radiator fan clutches come in two varieties – non-thermal and thermal. The former is more affordable but less effective. Not triggered by the temperature, it continually spins whether the engine is hot or cool. The latter activates when the engine’s around 170℉ and disengages when it’s cooler.
You’ll want to bring your radiator fan clutch for a check-up if you notice unusual noise coming from it, your engine is getting loud, or your vehicle’s performance seems diminished.

Expansion plugs

Expansion plugs

Expansion plugs are not something that the average driver even thinks about checking. And yet, these little plugs can cause a lot of damage if they’re not doing their job right.
Vehicle manufacturers often use sand casting to create some engine and cooling system parts. Once the parts have been molded and cooled, all the excess sand must be removed, so manufacturers leave small holes just for that. Then, they use small expansion plugs to seal up these holes.
While expansion plugs can last for years to come, even they are prone to deteriorating and causing leaks.
At Dependable Car Care, we’ll inspect all expansion plugs and replace them as needed, fixing any leaks they might have caused.

Radiator hose(s)

Like other cooling system hoses, radiator hoses are designed to lead liquid to and from the engine. As a general rule of thumb, radiator hoses will be the largest hoses under your hood.
The upper hose will be connected to the radiator and the thermostat housing, while the lower hose will lead to the water pump. If any of these hoses burst, you must immediately bring your vehicle in for a radiator hose replacement.

Thermostat

Thermostat

The thermostat is a critical piece of equipment within your cooling system. It’s located between the radiator and the engine, and its primary function is to manage coolant flow into the radiator, only letting the fluid into the radiator once the engine is warm enough. It helps the engine maintain a functional operating temperature and warm up quickly.
Considering how essential it is, checking the thermostat frequently should always be on your to-do list.
If your thermostat is on its last breath, you’ll start noticing issues such as engine overheating, leaking coolant, unstable temperature, etc. Replacing the thermostat in-house is possible, but if you have no experience with it, it’s in your best interest to visit Dependable Car Care.

Thermostat testing

Thermostat testing

Thermostat testing is a relatively simple process, but it’s always in your best interest to have an experienced mechanic do it.
As a general rule of thumb, the mechanic will open the hood and start the car, letting it idle. They’ll then check to see if the coolant is flowing. When the car is just started, the thermostat shouldn’t flow as the engine hasn’t yet reached its operating temperature. If it’s flowing, it’s a sign that the thermostat isn’t doing its job.
Additionally, the mechanic will check the flow after the engine has reached its operating temperature. At this point, the coolant should be flowing freely, and it’s a sign of trouble if it doesn’t.

Thermostat replacement

Thermostat replacement

If your thermostat prevents the coolant from flowing when it should or lets it flow when it shouldn’t, it’s high time to replace it. Otherwise, your engine will become a ticking time bomb, waiting for the most inopportune moment to overheat.
At Dependable Car Care, we offer AC thermostat replacement and testing services. We’ll show you how to test a thermostat yourself so you can always know if that’s the part that’s causing you trouble.
If you notice signs that you’re due for an HVAC thermostat replacement, contact us to schedule your appointment and ensure that your car is in pristine condition. While you can perform a home thermostat replacement, it’s always in your best interest to leave this task to the professionals. Replacing your thermostat is a quick process, rarely taking more than half an hour to an hour to complete.
