One of the best ways to ensure your safety on the road beyond being a defensive driver is taking responsibility for proper tire service. Drivers greatly reduce their risk of needing emergency tire repairs or of having an accident when they take care of the proper service and maintenance. There are three key tips every driver should follow in order to enhance driving safety and prevent emergency tire repairs.
Proper Tire Pressure
Tires that are under-inflated or over-inflated can cause a tire to fail, resulting in an accident. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your vehicle’s glove box and know how to use it. Look on the driver’s side door jam for the manufacturer’s recommended air pressure and check it at least weekly. Proper inflation pressure helps increase fuel economy, prevents premature tread wear or overheating and failing at high speeds, as well as eliminating the possibility of rough handling of the vehicle.
Proper Tread
The patterned groves on the surface of tires loses traction as they become more shallow. An important tire service trick is to insert a penny into the middle tread, positioning Lincoln’s head facing you and upside down. It’s time to head to your tire dealer for new tires if you can see all of Lincoln’s head during this test.
Balance and Rotation
Tires don’t wear evenly due to the weight distribution of your vehicle. A good rule of thumb is to have a rotation service performed about every 5000 to 7500 miles of driving, or about every other oil change. Tire balancing is also essential for proper performance that enhances safe driving. An out-of-balance wheel can cause dangerous vibrations, especially at high speeds. Check the balance at least once very 15,000 miles of driving.
