As a conscientious driver, you may be concerned with understanding what systems of your vehicle should be included in the regular vehicle maintenance schedule. Read the service requirements listed in your owner’s manual, or ask your mechanic for advice about what car maintenance is needed for your vehicle, including the mileage interval.
Here is a sample of a regular vehicle maintenance schedule for you to check-out:
- Windshield Wiper Blades –When the blades are exposed to excessive heat or cold the rubber may stiffen and no longer wipe the water off the glass. Replace at least once a year or more if you live in a rainy climate.
- Car Battery, Starter, and Alternator – If your lights are dim and you run a lot of accessories, check out the car battery. You should replace it at least every five years. Be sure to have the starter and alternator checked out as well.
- Brake System (rotors, pads, and calipers) – If you do a lot of stop-and-go driving, you may need to replace these components more often than people who drive on straight level roads.
- Accessory Drive Belt/Serpentine Belt – This belt operates many parts of your vehicle, including the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, air pump, and the A/C compressor. Check with your owner’s manual for the recommended mileage interval to replace it.
- Radiator, coolant, hoses, and belts – The radiator circulates coolant and water throughout the engine to prevent it from overheating. Look for cracks, leaks, and brittle hoses.
- Air Filter – The air filter prevents harmful debris, dirt, and contaminants from entering your engine. It also prevents dust, pollen, dirt and other pollutants from entering your car through your A/C and heat vents.
- Transmission – If you are starting to experience shifting problems, it may be time for a simple transmission flush or other services. Don’t wait until you are experiencing major transmission problems.
- Tires – Tires need to be replaced about every 45,000 miles depending upon the wear and the age of the tire. Don’t forget about wheel alignment, tire balancing, and rotating as needed.
- Oil Changes – A small but critical service that should be taken care of to keep your engine lubricated and prevent overheating.
